Description

This rich pot of chili is exactly why many people consider it one of the best chili recipes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained
  • 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust for heat)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar (balances acidity)
  • ½ teaspoon oregano
  • Optional: toppings including shredded cheese, sour cream, chopped green onions, and fresh cilantro

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until soft (about 3–4 minutes).
  2. Add garlic and cook for another minute while stirring gently so it does not burn.
  3. Add ground beef and cook until browned. Break it apart with a spoon while cooking.
  4. Stir in tomato paste and cook for about one minute (this deepens the flavor).
  5. Add crushed tomatoes, beef broth, kidney beans, and black beans. Stir well.
  6. Mix in chili powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, cayenne pepper, salt, black pepper, and brown sugar.
  7. Bring the chili to a gentle simmer. Reduce heat to low and cook uncovered for 40–45 minutes (stir occasionally).
  8. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve hot with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • Ground turkey can replace beef for a lighter version.
