Description
This rich pot of chili is exactly why many people consider it one of the best chili recipes.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 pounds ground beef
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained
- 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 tablespoons chili powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust for heat)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon brown sugar (balances acidity)
- ½ teaspoon oregano
- Optional: toppings including shredded cheese, sour cream, chopped green onions, and fresh cilantro
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until soft (about 3–4 minutes).
- Add garlic and cook for another minute while stirring gently so it does not burn.
- Add ground beef and cook until browned. Break it apart with a spoon while cooking.
- Stir in tomato paste and cook for about one minute (this deepens the flavor).
- Add crushed tomatoes, beef broth, kidney beans, and black beans. Stir well.
- Mix in chili powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, cayenne pepper, salt, black pepper, and brown sugar.
- Bring the chili to a gentle simmer. Reduce heat to low and cook uncovered for 40–45 minutes (stir occasionally).
- Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve hot with your favorite toppings.
Notes
- Ground turkey can replace beef for a lighter version.
